Madeira Carnival festivities offer a variety of activities you can choose from, with the option to enjoy them as a simple spectator or as an active participant.
In Madeira, the Carnival season is experienced in a constant festive atmosphere, both with official initiatives and those of a more spontaneous character, deep-rooted in Madeiran tradition, with joy and cheerfulness prevailing in the streets, establishments and private homes.
MADEIRA FLOWER FESTIVAL
May,4th to 21st 2017
Floral species originating in many parts of the world bloom in Madeira, as the island meets specific climatic conditions that allow species from both tropical and cold regions to flourish.
The Flower Festival is a tribute to spring, and the celebration of metamorphosis and rebirth, fertility and the abundance of the flowers that colour, perfume and inebriate the surrounding environment and that give value and take the good name of this tourist destination across borders.

The Santo da Serra golf course is the main venue for the 2015 edition of the Madeira Island Open Golf championship, part of the Main PGA European Tour.
The Madeira Island Open Golf championship is an event on the European tour that brings together sport’s best players who, hole by hole, fight it out for victory. According to the rules, the last two days of each tournament are played only by the 70 best contestants from the first two days.
Santo da Serra Golf Club rates as one of the most spectacular courses in Europe, with staggering views from the mountains to the sea below.
MADEIRA ATLANTIC FESTIVAL
June,3rd, 10th,17th and 24th 2017
The Madeira Atlantic Festival, an event that sets the beginning of the summer season in Madeira, is one of the most recent tourist entertainment events, to be held betweem June 4th to 25th.
This event consists of a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, with emphasis on the pyromusical shows; the Atlantic Roots Festival and the Regional Arts Week.
MADEIRA WINE FESTIVAL
August, 27th to September,10th 2017
The Madeira Wine Festival is one of the island´s main tourist attractions that pays tribute to this precious nectar and its undeniable socioeconomic significance.
Taking place during the grape harvest in late August, early September, this event aims to recreate the old traditions of Madeira, which were developed over centuries of labour in viticulture.
This event has been commemorated since the late seventies of the last century. It begins in Funchal and includes European Folklore Week, ornamentations, exhibitions and live portraits depicting wine and its crafts and light and traditional music performances.
This Festival culminates in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, with the Wine Harvest Festival.
September,14th to 16th 2017
The Columbus Festival is based on the historical re-enactment of the time when this famous merchant lived in Porto Santo Island, recalling his stay in the Madeira Islands.
The festival takes place during the month of September, in the city of Vila Baleira, and features a set of activities that seek to recall the epic Portuguese Discoveries.
The event includes the disembarking of Columbus, a sixteenth-century market with food, crafts, street performances, circus arts, theatrical representations and staging of peace and war ordeals common at the time, games of skill, weapons training, acrobatics and juggling, lots of music and exotic dances, ensuring permanent entertainment and a constant uproar among the various figures characteristic of the time.
MADEIRA NATURE FESTIVAL
October,3rd to 8th 2017
The Madeira Nature Festival promotes for a week tourist activities based on nature thus encouraging a direct contact with the rich natural heritage of the archipelago of Madeira.
It’s the newest event of the official tourist entertainment calendar, held for the first time in October 2011.
Whether on the land, in the air or in the sea, the choices are multiple and visitors can experience a wide range of different activities suitable for all ages. In addition to these activities there are many more as part of this festival celebrating sport, entertainment, culture and Madeiran traditions.
MADEIRA CHRISTMAS AND END OF THE YEAR FESTIVITIES
December,1st to January,7th 2018
The arrival of the decorative lights in the streets of the city centre of Funchal, during the month of December, sets the beginning of the Madeira Christmas and End of the Year Festivities programme.
These festivities culminate with the famous fireworks show, officially recognised in 2006 by the Guinness Book of Records, as the largest fireworks show in the world.
These commemorations consist of a rich and extensive programme of cultural, religious, ethnographic and artistic manifestations that take place throughout the entire month of December and end with the celebration of Twelfth Night.
